Here is my story: I am a Boston girl through and through, born and raised in the Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan neighborhoods. As the youngest of six, I learned early what it took to be strong and determined. At 12 I lost my father which was hard but did in fact fuel my drive to succeed. 

 

At my High School graduation, ​I was awarded a scholarship to Boston University which was great, but life had other things in store. I took a chance and joined a Motown Revue group which paid tribute to legends such as The Supremes, The Temptations, The Miracles, and I had the chops to sing the Gladys Knight and Aretha Franklin tunes! Still do!

 

My story has taken me into many directions. From that of breaking barriers as the first black female dock receiver at Neiman-Marcus in Copley Square, to insurance claims and insurance defense law. I went back to school which saw me get my B.A. in Psychology, followed by my M.S. in Developmental Psychology, an MBA in Entrepreneurial Thinking and Innovative Practices, and finally my Ph.D. in Criminal Justice Systems (courts, corrections, law enforcement). It was not easy. I've had some friendships come and go, but I have learned that it is okay to outgrow people and places. It’s all part of the journey.

Do not let anyone dim your light of becoming the best version of yourself as you grow, learn and push forward. Own your journey. Do not apologize for it! Take your breaks as you climb. Enjoy the surroundings. Get your rest and keep climbing!
